Posted: 1/1/2014 9:44:05 PM Edited: 3/30/2023 1:25:08 PM (1)   Hi Gang, I thought I’d pose a question here, because I learn so much so often from this forum.   My father, who’s 74 and in excellent health, started having atrial fibrillation this week.  His heard continued to beat fast when he finished exercising at the gym (he’s a daily exerciser) for a little while twice, and then at midnight a couple of days ago, it began racing again and wouldn’t slow down for hours. He went to the ER, where they looked for clots endoscopically and, finding none, shocked his heart to bring back a normal rhythm.  It worked; h’es now out of A-fib. He’s also out of the hospital, taking Wafarin and injecting Lovenox until his Wafarin levels reach the right place. He’s seeing his new cardiologist tomorrow.  For what it’s worth, he had a calcium score of 0 four years ago, and he had a CTA two years ago, which showed no plaquing and no other problems.  (He has always had amazingly high HDL levels.) So I’m wondering if anyone has (1) any sense of what might be causing this; I’m sure his doctor will have much to say about this in light of all the tests they ran; and (2) what are the best treatments these days for a-fib?  I’ve read some of the threads here using the search function, and from that I take it that he should add magnesium and that there are a bunch of new drugs in addition to wafarin now, although the long term benefits over wafarin aren’t yet clear.  Also (3) is anticoagulant therapy necessary in perpetuity, or can he call it a day if the episodes can be eliminated.
