What does it mean to "believe" something.  I think for the first 50 years of my life I never much considered what beliefs were, or where I got them.

I heard a quote that said, "90% of people start out with what they WANT TO BELIEVE, then work backwards".

What a great quote!  We saw that with Ansel Keys.  He WANTED to believe that saturated fat causes heart disease, then cherry picked the data backwards to support that, and ignored the data that didn’t.  We’ve seen it with vegans. "Meat is bad", then only accept data that supports that belief.

It’s freeing to just be NEUTRAL on as many beliefs as possible.

Humans naturally want to confirm what they believe.  It’s called "Conformational Bias".

As I understand it, it’s one of the things that the Reticular Activating System (RAS) does in the brain.  The RAS wants to show you (confirm) what you believe.  It’s one of the reasons, say, if you’re going to buy a new Jeep, you suddenly become aware of all the Jeeps that there are on the road.

Some beliefs seem silly, like the Earth is flat.  Beliefs seem more solid if they’re built on tangible evidence (science).  Common beliefs are that "saturated fat causes heart attacks".  But what about beliefs about religions, are they valid? How does anyone know THEIR belief is real?  Beliefs are usually built on a series of personal experiences.  Everyone has had different personal experiences. So everyone has different beliefs.

Most conventional doctor’s beliefs are just what someone else taught them in training.

And the teacher’s beliefs were what they were taught from their training.

Beliefs can be passed down from generation to generation.

Several big companies have tried to reproduce large experiments that we are currently basing our "beliefs".   Repeatedly, only about 10% of studies’ outcomes can be reproduced.

Tom Naughton did a great, simple summery of beliefs calling it a Belief Engine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1RXvBveht0&t=336s

Deepok Chopra was probably the first person I’d ever heard on the idea of "Letting go of your beliefs".

It is a hard concept.  How does one go through life without beliefs?

At it’s most basic, we have the belief that you have to eat food to survive.  We have to drink water to survive.  We have to stay warm to survive.

We try to form beliefs by what happens to us.  We try to attach some significance to what happens to us.

Some people believe that the things that happens to us, happen for some Reason.

They take it to the point where they think EVERYTHING that happens during the day has some spiritual meaning.  I can see that’s true for SOME things, but not EVERYthing.  So if a mosquito bites you...that has some kind of spiritual meaning?  I don’t believe so.

I like the Lord Of The Rings.  There’s a great guote in it.

Thranduil: "I can see you know nothing of wizards. They are like winter thunder on a wild wind - rolling in from a distance - breaking hard in alarm. But sometimes a storm is just a storm."  -The Lord of the Rings, The Battle of the 5 Armies

I think of that quote often when I try to attach a belief to some natural occurrence.  Sometimes a storm IS just a storm.

It’s like asking someone if they believe in the Virgin Birth.

Now whether you DO believe in the Virgin Birth or whether you DON’T believe in the Virgin Birth...it doesn’t matter, because IT’S WHAT YOU BELIEVE!

And showing people graphs and charts one way or another isn’t going to change that belief.

Sometimes we’re taught our beliefs by our relatives.  I often think of a song from the musical The South Pacific, "You’ve got to be taught to hate and fear...You’ve got to be taught before it’s TOO LATE. Before you are 6 or 7 or 8. To hate all the people your relatives hate.  You’ve got to be carefully taught."

Some beliefs are Global beliefs.  People are____.  I am_____.

Deepok Chopra also has said, "The only reason people grow old and die is because they see other people growing old and dying.

Is the only reason we age because we BELIEVE we SHOULD be aging?

It makes me wonder if some Alien race (that were immortal) came to Earth and kidnapped a human baby, then took that baby back to their planet, how would that person age?

Would they "age" past 30?

I was listening to one of my Podcasts where the host said, "People can live to age 200 just eating jelly donuts!"

At first glance that seems impossible.  But I think it IS possible.

I don’t believe I could do it, but I think it’s possible.

You’d have to have a ROCK SOLID belief that you COULD live to 200 or 300 years old.

You’d have to have a ROCK SOLID belief that jelly donuts are the healthiest thing you could possibly eat.

There is something to this that I haven’t put my finger on yet in my journey.

Which leads me to wonder, "Well, how much of our current health problems are just persistent beliefs.

Einstein said, "Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a persistent one".

Which leads you down the rabbit hole of "What is Reality?"

Do we create our own reality by what we continue to believe?

Are we living in a Matrix?

Sorry, this is a lot of rambling, but that’s how the belief structure works...rambling.

I think the main part of this, and maybe the most important part, is to just become AWARE.

Become AWARE of what your beliefs are and where they came from.

Become AWARE that you don’t have to continue a belief till the day you die.  Beliefs are malleable and can be changed.

At least that’s what I believe...

Very nice, Boo! I thoroughly enjoyed reading your thoughts.

Tom Naughton is a friend of mine and, time and again, I am wowed by his intelligence and ability to cut through the crap.

Touched upon in another thread:

I believe how I feel.

Or, is that overly simplistic?

GDGatz,
Do you mean if you’re told something will make things better but it makes things worse - you trust how you feel?  I would vote for that!

Ohhhhh.  Engineers are THE BEST PATIENTS POSSIBLE!!!

Engineers generally HATE being sheep...

I understand Ivor Cummins and Dave Feldman are both engineers.

I don’t believe much, only what can be tested and not contradicted.

Quoted From dan2341: only what can be tested and not contradicted.

Boy...that’s gonna be a small list.  Gravity.  Sunrise.  Death.  Taxes.
