I’ve been using the Abbott Free Style Libre "Flash" implantable glucose monitor for a little bit over two weeks now and these are a great tools for getting your blood sugar stable and for implementing Dr. Davis’s "No Change" rule after a meal. I’m very happy with this overall.

They are also a great tool for finding dietary mistakes that might push up your blood sugar without you knowing it. For example, I ate some plain home made unsweetened yogurt that pushed up my blood sugar to over 100. Without the Free Style Libre meter, I would probably not have realized that there were some carbs in that yogurt somewhere.

You’ll still make mistakes in your diet, but at least you can only make them only once then correct them.

I’m sure that some of the users of this forum are using different meters like this. So what are your favorite continuous (or close to that) glucose meters?

The Free Style Libre requires that you move the meter over the sensor to scan a reading, then it will update the last 8 hours of data for you. It won’t automatically alarm if you become hypo or hyper glycemic. That’s a down side. It’s also VERY sensitive to vitamin C, so if your multivitamin has 200 mg. of vitamin C in it, expect to see an extra 10 to 20 points on your meter.  It’s also not terribly accurate. My first sensor would exactly match my traditional abbot meter at 84, but when the traditional meter was showing 95, the first Free Style Libre sensor was showing 125. This turned out to not be as big a downside as I might have expected as relative blood sugars were more important to me than absolute numbers.

I paid 2,999 Mexican pesos (about 170 dollars) at Costco in Merida Mexico for the meter and two 14 day sensors. The first one did last 14 days for me and I’m currently on my second sensor.  Packs of two 14 day sensor are $ 2,500 MXN pesos at Costco. So the sensors are about $70 each and you might accidentally knock one off and simply have to spend an additional $70 sooner than you expected.

So do any of you have suggestions on this type of meters?  I particularly want to know where to buy cheaper (perhaps used) meters and lower cost sensors.

Brent-V,
You can also download the data from the Libre onto a spreadsheet.  That gives you all the measurements the meter takes and not just the ones that you get from passing the reader over the sensor.

FYI I do know that the functional MDs in our area in WI do readily provide CGMs for non-diabetic purposes, and actually their usage for self-testing purposes.
