I'm satisfied with this year's CAC score even though it's high, it's exactly the same as last year's score 1327.4, right down to the decimal point. The chart below shows my scores over the past 8 years, and it looks like I may have found the key to score stability. I had been on warfarin for many years to prevent recurrent DVTs, but when comparing calcium scores of people on warfarin with those not on warfarin, the warfarin users typically have much higher CAC scores. This makes sense because warfarin is a vitamin K antagonist, and vitamin K2 helps to prevent arterial calcification. So when the new anticoagulants became available, I was able to convince my hematologist to prescribe pradaxa for me rather than warfarin. This was logical because pradaxa is not a vitamin K antagonist and so I could then supplement vitamin K2 as much as I wanted to without fear of destroying the anticoagulant power of pradaxa, which certainly can't be done if you are on warfarin. I switched to pradaxa in the summer of 2011, indicated by the vertical red line on the chart below. I gradually increased K2, both MK-4 and MK-7, but nominal amounts of both didn't seem to make much difference in my continuing CAC score increase. Finally, after getting a higher score in the summer of 2012 I decided to be more aggressive and started pushing both MK-4 and MK-7 to the limits reached in Japanese studies, 45 mg/day for MK-4 and 1 mg/day for MK-7. That seems to have resulted in a 2% reduction in score last year, and no change in score this year. Hopefully this trend will continue.
