Posted: 9/8/2010 6:07:52 PM Edited: 8/11/2023 12:41:57 PM (1)   I finally have started to work on the blood glucose control part of the TYP program.  First, I got an HbA1c test, fully expecting that I would post an enviable number.  Most of my numbers to date have looked good, other than (i) a CAC scan putting me in the 80th percentile more or less and (ii) my familial hypercholesterolemia, with big fluffy LDL particles ranging from 1500 to 2400 on NMR tests (ugly numbers to be sure).   So, my HbA1c came back at 5.7%. That is higher than I expected (my BMI is 23, with no hint of diabetes, and no family history of it). Fasting glucose has been 90 to 92.   OK, so I plugged my HbA1c number into what I thought to be the standard conversion formula of HbA1c to average blood glucose (the formula in Dr. D’s blog from March 2010), and it gave an average blood glucose level of 117.  Yikes!   Well, I see from an old thread to which Harry35 contributed that there are other formulas for this conversion.  Jenny Ruhl has posted on this too. I read also that there are three or perhaps four different HbA1c test methods, leading to different results.   Maybe I am asking this to soon, but I have now started to test my blood glucose at home.  After one whole entire day of testing (3 meals), the highest I saw was 111. Fasting was 92. I even had some bread with dinner.  111 at 1H.   I suppose I could be having some kind of spikes overnight, but I am suspecting that the conversion formula I used is inflated.  I see another formula (attributed to a “Nathan” by several sources, although Harry35’s old post attributed a different formula to Nathan) that yields 104, which seems more believable.   My question: What formula do you believe is accurate for you to convert HbA1c to an estimated average blood glucose?      Nathan (per Jenny Ruhl): Avg BG  = (HbA1c * 33.3) – 86 Dr. Davis:   Avg BG =  (HbA1c * 28.7) – 46.7 Duma:         Avg BG = (((HbA1c*536)/(100-HbA1c))^(1/0.741))       With these formulas, HbA1c of 5.7% yields avg BG of 104, 117 and 109, respectively.   Old thread with good stuff in it: /forum/topics.aspx?ID=5067 Moderator note 2023-08-11: basenote date revised as a side effect of getting this "UnKnown" TYP-vintage thread cross-assigned to a suitable Inner Circle forum.
