I have fermented two batches of L Gasseri yogurt now and in both cases, they have a bit of a funk smell (this latest kind of a dirty feet smell) with an ammonia smell as well.  I skimmed off the top layer and could still smell it, so I poured off some of the liquid.  Once I spooned the remainder into jars, the smell seems to have gone away when I smell them not in the bowl I originally used to make it.  Trying to figure out what happened. I guess I recall older blue-cheese having an ammonia-like smell, so I’m wondering if it was mold.  In any case, should I trust the now-fine-smelling yogurt?  Any similar experiences and how might I avoid this in the future?
