When I subscribe to a thread it takes me to a new page where I see an option to choose to be notified of new posts but it won’t allow me to change from "no" to "yes".

Maybe in your personal notification settings you already have marked NOT to receive notices via the internal messaging system. I have. So, when I subscribe to a thread, I receive an email notification whenever there’s a new post.
