I’ve perused old forum discussions on the subject of pain relievers. Some of these are several years old and I wonder if there are new risks (or benefits).

I need to have some extensive foot surgeries (both feet) to correct effects of hypermobile metatarsals (not just the first one). I’m not in a place in my life or career that I can be non-weightbearing for weeks and anticipate it will be at least 6 months before I have the first surgery.

I am having some substantial foot pain, especially at night, which affects my ability to fall asleep so I need to take some pain medication and so far I can get (enough) relief from ibuprofen or Aleve. I do not take aspirin and I take pain relievers only when I can’t sleep.

What are the the risks of long term over the counter pain relievers? I read that Aleve is the most benign, but is it benign. Do I need to take probiotics while I take pain relievers?

Any suggestions for non-drug pain relief? If I can find something that will help me lie in the bed without squirming so I can fall asleep, I’d be happy. Due to the extensive ligament and bone work I need in my feet, I expect to need pain relief for quite awhile and I will try to avoid prescription-strength and opioids, the latter of which typically make me feel worse.
